Professor Tembi Tichaawa
From humble beginnings as a street car guard, Prof. Tembi Maloney Tichaawa is a Full Professor and Head of Department in the School of Tourism and Hospitality: Department of Tourism at the University of Johannesburg. He holds a PhD in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Master’s Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management (Cum Laude) from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Tembi has a combined 15 years’ industry and academic experience in the domain of tourism, events and hospitality management. Tembi is a passionate teacher and researcher. He lectures a number of modules in the tourism discipline including: Tourism Development, Management and Research Methodology.
Tembi has published and co-published 63 articles in SAPSE accredited peer reviewed academic journals, in addition to 18 conference proceedings. Tembi has also presented over 42 research papers at both local and international academic conferences. He has successfully supervised over 76 students at BTech/Hons level,18 at Master’s Degree level and 4 at PhD level. Tembi is currently supervising 5 masters and 5 doctoral candidates.
Tembi conducts research on a range of developmental issues linked to tourism, hospitality and events management with specific focus on the developing context. Tembi’s vision is to contribute in advancing STH’s vision to create sought after leaders in the tourism and hospitality sector in Africa.
