Greenwich students succeed in first IAES-supported competition in China

Three events management students from the University of Greenwich won second prize in an international competition in China’s Zhejiang province in November 2019.

The competition was the first to be organised with the support of the International Association for Events Studies. It grew from a collaboration between Dr Mingguang Liu and James Kennell and established an early model for connecting events students and educators internationally.

Denis Petrov, Galena Todorova and Monika Kovacheva were selected by the Zhejiang International Exhibition Bureau, which funded their visit to China. Competing against students from 29 Chinese universities, they developed and presented an event concept for the following year’s Zhejiang Global Exhibition Forum.

Their technology-led proposal drew on the industrial strengths of Hangzhou and aimed to attract UK events professionals to the 2020 forum. The team presented the idea to senior industry figures and Chinese politicians, supported by their lecturers Dr James Kennell and Dr Ewa Krolikowska-Adamczyk.

The students described the competition as an important opportunity to develop practical skills, experience Chinese culture and build international networks. Their success marked an important early stage in the educational collaboration that IAES has continued to develop.
